Purpose:
As treatment is rendered to clients with disordered gambling, the treatment provider holds intrinsic values and biases which influence the language and perceptions of both the client and the client’s experiences.

This workshop first explores those own values, beliefs, knowledge and skills which influence a therapist’s ability to intervene in a culturally sensitive and relevant way with the client. Next, we will move to cultural beliefs about gambling, when the facilitator will explore how a person’s culture influences his or her beliefs about gambling, and how these beliefs inform therapy.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, the participant will be able to:

  • Examine his or her own cultural biases and beliefs through self-assessment.
  • Name seven areas that are part of culture.
  • Understand the role of acculturation regarding gambling activity.
  • Identify four tasks a therapist can use to provide culturally competent treatment.
  • Cite five gambling beliefs that are influenced by a client’s culture.
