Purpose:
This workshop includes a discussion of triggers, and their potential for relapse. Citing tools from multiple researchers and therapists, the presenter will discuss treatment tools such as functional analysis, relapse prevention and self-efficacy to offer clinicians techniques for working towards positive outcomes with addicted clients. Due to time constraints, the technique portion will be an overview rather than in-depth practicum, intended to provide participants with the information to investigate the techniques further at their leisure.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, the participant will be able to:

  • Define a trigger, as related to an addiction, and identify at least three types of triggers;
  • Identify the primary purpose of relapse prevention;
  • Understand and define ego depletion;
  • Assist a client in cognitive restructuring;
  • Use functional analysis as a method of increasing client mindfulness.

Unit Outline:

  • Discussion of types of triggers and identification of triggers (Ciarrocchi)
  • Purpose and concepts of relapse prevention (Marlatt and George)
  • CBT change process and functional analysis
  • Defining ego depletion (Baumeister, et al.)
  • Theory of Self-Efficacy (Bandura)
