This session uncovers the hidden pressures and realities faced within LGBTQ+ communities that can influence risk, coping, and behavior. It brings a deeper, more human lens to understanding gambling beyond the surface.

Class Description

It is generally known that the LGBTQ+ community face addiction at higher rates than the general population. This presentation will provide participants with a richer understanding of LGBTQ+ individuals (including basic knowledge of identities and terms), empirical research on LGBTQ+ risk for addiction, the prevalence of LGBTQ+ gambling and risk toward disordered gambling, and how to use LGBTQ+ cultural humility tools to best work with LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least three core cultural terms and concepts relevant to LGBTQ+ identity that affect behavioral health and treatment engagement
  • List a minimum of four barriers to care that increase risk for gambling disorder in LGBTQ+ populations
  • Recognize two or more research-based trends in gambling behaviors among LGBTQ+ subgroups
  • Describe at least three ways minority stress and intersectionality influence help-seeking and clinical outcomes
  • Apply three culturally responsive strategies to enhance inclusivity and safety in treatment environments for LGBTQ+ clients
