Class Description
The aim of this session is to provide a broad introduction to gambling behavior and gambling disorder. It is designed to be appropriate for anyone, regardless of their baseline level of familiarity with these topics. It is meant to increase competence recognizing and discussing gambling, particularly how to recognize when gambling behavior might be problematic, and how to connect individuals with helping resources.
Learning Objectives
- Define gambling and identify at least 5 gambling behaviors or opportunities, including both traditional and contemporary forms such as online gambling and gaming-related betting
- Differentiate among 3 levels of gambling behavior (safe or recreational gambling, risky gambling, and gambling disorder) by accurately describing at least 2 distinguishing characteristics of each level
- Identify a minimum of 4 DSM-5-TR symptoms of Gambling Disorder and name at least 3 associated mental health outcomes or comorbid conditions
- Identify and use the three questions on the Brief Biosocial Gambling Screen
Educational Goals
- Increase foundational knowledge of gambling behaviors and modern gambling opportunities encountered in clinical practice
- Build awareness of the continuum of gambling-related harm and the psychosocial consequences associated with increased gambling intensity
- Strengthen clinician understanding of Gambling Disorder as defined in the DSM-5-TR, including symptom presentation and severity levels
- Support early identification of gambling-related risk through effective screening awareness and clinical observation
- Encourage confident and informed referral conversations with individuals who may benefit from gambling-related treatment services
