Class Description

Gambling and gaming is engaged in across diverse populations and communities; however, the prevalence and data on risk factors influencing the progression into problem and disordered gambling also include racially and ethnically diverse communities (Okuda et al., 2016). Research also documents that health disparities and health equity impact gambling care among communities with cultural communities (Ortiz et al., 2021) and must be centered in gambling care. Do you understand that when health professionals practice patient centered culturally sensitive healthcare (Tucker et al., 2015), treatment outcomes improve? Are you comfortable with cultural broaching (Day-Vines et al., 2007) and can you apply practical strategies to broach the subjects of race, ethnicity and culture in your gambling care (Day-Vines et al., 2021)? Do we understand that humans struggle with belonging and may engage in risky gambling behaviors when they struggle with belonging? This seminar will highlight and review these key considerations in gambling care and help you enhance your gambling care outcomes.
