Purpose:
During this hour-long session, we examine each of the many different types of gamblers in detail. We will learn about the gambling progression, and how it differs for action and escape gamblers, and we will consider what the classification of gambling as a non-substance related disorder in the DSM-V means.

Participants will learn about risk factors and indicators of problem gambling, and how these may be used to identify the type of gambler. They will also study the problem gambling continuum, and learn where the lines lie between social, problem and disordered gambling.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, the participant will be able to:

  • Learn, in detail, to identify types of gamblers including social, problem, disordered and professional;
  • Understand the subtle differences, as observed by Dr. Robert L. Custer, in how action and escape gamblers advance through the gambling progression;
  • Understand gambling as a non-substance related disorder in the DSM-V.
